Memorial of a Christian Life
This was one of the most widely used books on the spiritual life of Spain and Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It was highly praised by St Francis de Sales. St Francis told his auxiliary bishop he should have two books for spiritual reading and for instruction of the people, A Sinner's Guide and A Memoriall of the Christian Life by Louis of Granada. But if he could only have one it should be A Sinner's Guide ( probably because the Memoriall is so long by comparison). Ven. Louis of Granada was the spiritual advisor to St Treasa of Avila, St John of the Cross and many other well known saints. This particular work is geared for the layman and is one of the best I've ever read. Its chapters on Confession and the Blessed Sacrament are superb. Some of the practices Friar Louis speaks of are dated but not many. I'm reading the 1975 Scolar Press edition available through the Inter Library Loan system. I wish someone would reissue this edition or perhaps put out a new edition in modern English.
